Reports indicate that Apple plans to refrain from making major enhancements to the AirPods until the year 2026. The company updated its AirPods range last year with the launch of the AirPods 4, which finally introduced active noise cancellation (ANC) to the standard true wireless earbuds. However, the developments for this year might differ. In the upcoming year, it is anticipated that the iPhone manufacturer will unveil a new model featuring AirPods equipped with an infrared (IR) camera. Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst from TF Securities, provided insights on Apple's plans for the AirPods in a post on X (previously known as Twitter). His analysis suggests that substantial upgrades to the TWS earbuds are unlikely until 2026. At the same time, a refresh of the AirPods Max is expected in the next few years.

Kuo has indicated that Apple is working on a lighter variant of the AirPods Max, which could potentially move into mass production by 2027. Beyond updates to current models, the tech company is also expected to launch a new product: AirPods featuring built-in IR cameras. According to Kuo, this new device may also start mass production in the coming year. This aligns with earlier reports that suggested the company is developing AirPods and Apple Watch models that include cameras with functionalities similar to those of smart glasses.

Kuo has previously mentioned that these IR cameras may improve the auditory experience. By sensing changes in the surrounding environment, the AirPods could facilitate a wider range of gestures. The integrated camera in these true wireless earbuds is anticipated to support “in-air gesture” controls. Additionally, the device is expected to recognize hand movements. The forthcoming AirPods are also said to provide an enhanced spatial audio experience in conjunction with Apple's Vision Pro spatial headset. For instance, if a user turns their head towards a specific direction, the spatial sound emanating from that source may become more pronounced, creating a more immersive listening experience.
