Police were not aware of attack on girl until the girl’s mother approached the Chicago Police Superintendent Eddie Johnson as he was leaving a police station on the city’s West Side and showed him the video of the attack.

After watching the video, Eddie Johnson was said to be upset, both by content of the video and also by the fact that there were 40 viewers or even more, but none of the viewers thought of reporting the crime to authorities.

Chicago police have said that the attack involved five or six males. The girl’s mother told to Associated Press in the last month that following the attack, her daughter received online threats. The Chicago Sun-Times later reported that the victim’s family had been relocated.

The video marks the second time in the recent months which the Chicago police have investigated an apparent attack that was broadcast live on Facebook. Four people were arrested and charged in the month of January after a video showed the four people allegedly taunting and beating a mentally disabled man.
